My friend Alicia and I spent a few hours in Des Moines’ East Village neighborhood on Saturday. After a quick coffee and pastry at City Bakery, we stopped in at two of our favorite vintage stores. I picked up this beautiful ceramic vase two little gold frames, a petite strawberry shaped jar (I spotted a second one at Porch Light), along with a handful of vintage and antiqued buttons for new jewelry making endeavors and a copy of Little Women.
I was particularly thrilled with the vase and the book. The vase is a pretty gray green – like the color of succulent leaves – with a crackle finish, and the fluting with the raised flower design is so pretty. I’ve never seen a vase or planter like it before, and it has no markings on it.
The book was published around 1933 in conjunction with the release of the film starring Katherine Hepburn. There are a few photos of the actresses who play the sisters at the front of the book.
This edition has pretty aqua endpapers featuring line drawings of houses and trees and is marked “Courtesy of Stehli Silks Corporation.” It would make beautiful wallpaper or printed fabric. There’s also an inscription in the front…I love finding them in old books. This one reads “Christmas 1935. [to] Arda from Rhea and Ed.”
